A 20 Year Tradition in the Tampa Bay Area

The Beginning

1983
In October, Stageworks, led by founding Director Anna Brennen produced its first artist's dream: A Couple of White Chicks Sitting Around Talking, in an historical Ybor City storefront. Community and artist response to this work convinced her of the need for an artistic forum to address issues of diversity and social change.

The Place

1984

1987
The Mainstage program moved to the new Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center's Jaeb Theatre.

1992-1999
The University of Tampa's professional Theatre-In-Residence at the historic Falk Theatre.

1999-Present
Hillsborough Community College, professional Theatre-In-Residence at the Ybor campus.

Partnerships

1985-Present
Co-production programs, through collaboration with Dr. Marvin Kirschman, Hillsborough Community College, began in 1985. Ongoing partnerships include Hillsborough County Board of Education & Hillsborough County Arts Council (19 years), HCC (5 years), Tampa AIDS Network (8 years), The National Conference (5 years) and The Tampa Museum of Art (5 years)

1985-Present
Stageworks receives grants for artists' salaries from the State of Florida, Division of Cultural Affairs (19 years) and the Hillsborough County Arts Council (8 years).

Education

1985-Present
The Education/Outreach program began in 1985 with a tour of Hillsborough County public high schools.

1986-Present
Tour senior citizens' sites with a Senior Cabaret Series.

1992-Present
The Rainbow Tribe, a multi-racial ensemble, tours area high schools, junior highs and at-risk sites, addressing cultural and social issues: AIDS, African American history, racism, sexism, disability, drugs.

Workshops

1988-Present
The Playwriting Workshop, begun in 1988 is currently taught by Bruce Rodgers, Associate Artistic Director of the Asolo Theatre. The Adult acting Workshops were added in 1989.

New Florida Voices

1989-Present
Potluck '89-'93 and Briefs '94-Present staged full productions of original short plays by a total of 56 Florida playwrights. Longjohns '94-Present stages full production of original full-length plays by Florida playwrights.

National and International Tours

1990-Present
A Conversation With Georgia OKeeffe toured the Edinburgh Festival Fringe ('91) and Hong Kong Theatre Festival ('92) and toured four states. The Shaman's Dream performed at the Edinburgh Theatre Festival Fringe and two major American Museums, The Chrysler and the St. Louis Museum of Fine Art '92-94; Zora Neal Hurston toured Florida in '95-'96 season; Molly Sweeney in '97-'98; ...Georgia toured in '99 and Roarin' Judy in '00-01, African American Greats '92-04.

Stageworks is led by its Founder/Producing Director Anna Brennen; Managing Director Peggy Huey; an 8-member Executive Board; a 12-member Advisory Board; 8 part-time staff; 137 artists and over 300 volunteers. We serve over 20,000 audience members annually.
